A Human Rights-Based Approach: The Thread that Binds Our Work Across the E, S, and G

Human rights, and the responsibilities that companies and investors have to respect them as laid out in international frameworks like the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, reflect a binding thread that cuts across issues normally categorized as environmental, social, or governance. Indeed, ICCR’s programmatic and member-led work in all these areas, from climate change to political lobbying and beyond, addresses risks to people’s basic human rights.

Applying a human rights-based approach to our work and utilizing a human rights due diligence framework allows us not only to scrutinize how human rights risks are identified and managed, but also ensures that affected stakeholders are an integral part of that process. Given greater calls for sustainable investments and legislation increasingly mandating responsible business conduct, this session will assist investors in exploring how the human rights due diligence framework resonates with the particular focus of their advocacy efforts.

This session took place during the ICCR Spring 2023 Conference. Speakers included:

-- Anita Dorett Investor Alliance Director

-- Rebecca DeWinter Schmitt, Investor Alliance Associate Director
