Implementation of the EU Digital Services Act

The European Center for Not-for-Profit Law (ECNL) and Access Now, published a policy paper in September 2023 : "Towards Meaningful Fundamental Rights Impact Assessments under the DSA" which focuses on how companies need to understand, assess, and mitigate actual and forseeable risks to fundamental rights stemming from their services through fundamental rights impact assessment (FRIA). The paper is intended to support the meaningful implementation of FRIAs in particular by 'very large online platform or VLOPs' and 'very large online search engines or VLOSEs' to go beyond a tick-box exercise.

Karolina Iwańska, Digital Civic Space Advisor at ECNL speaks to this policy paper and provides an in-depth look at the European Union's Digital Services Act (DSA) and its mandated FRIAs. This vital legislation, which came into effect on 25 August 2023, is set to redefine online safety, privacy, and digital rights for millions. Learn more about how DSA's FRIA framework aims to protect our fundamental rights in the digital age and what it means for the future of the internet.
