Investor Engagement on CAHRA

investor alliance, peacenexus, and heartland initiative

In October 2023, the Investor Alliance, together with our partners PeaceNexus and Heartland Initiative, launched a new pilot project: Investor Engagement on Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas.

The aim of the pilot project is to support a group of investors in undertaking heightened human rights due diligence (hHRDD) of their investments in conflict-affected and high-risk areas (CAHRAs). The pilot project involves:

  • engaging a delimited set of portfolio companies in the technology and renewable energy sectors with exposure to risks in CAHRAs;

  • conducting effective, coordinated investor engagement with these companies to address those risks; and

  • reporting on lessons learned.

This project responds to the growing interest expressed by many investors in having tailored support and working collaboratively with civil society allies to enable effective CAHRA risk identification and management.

In April 2025, the Investor Alliance, with partners Heartland Initiative and PeaceNexus Foundation, released Navigating Portfolio Exposure to Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas: Practical Guidance for Investor Engagement with Companies, a practical, rights-based contribution to the limited guidance currently available for investors seeking to take a systemic approach to managing CAHRA risks across their portfolios and to those companies pursuing better policies, practices, and governance measures in response to today’s volatile geopolitical landscape.
