Investor Statement on Strengthening the Australian Modern Slavery Act
In April of 2026, the Investor Alliance joined over 100 stakeholders in signing a letter calling on Australia's Attorney-General to strengthen the country's Modern Slavery Act.
The letter was submitted against the backdrop of consultations by the Australian Government on whether to introduce human rights due diligence requirements into the Modern Slavery Act 2018 following recommendations from an independent statutory review of the legislation.
The Human Rights Law Centre coordinated the multi-stakeholder letter which provides high-level support for the introduction of risk-based due diligence requirements into Australia’s modern slavery laws in alignment with key international standards such as the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises on Responsible Business Conduct.
For companies operating under multiple frameworks across jurisdictions, there could be significant benefit in promoting a consistent, pragmatic regulatory response at this crucial time in the Australian law reform process.
